In October 2019, the Dr. K. Shantha Breast Cancer Foundation (SBCF), in collaboration with Dr. G. Viswanathan Group of Hospitals, Trichy, hosted a heartfelt initiative under the Pink October campaign — the “Donate Hair 2019” drive.
The campaign, known as “Bald Is Beautiful”, encouraged women to donate their hair to support breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
A Gift of Hair, A Gift of Confidence
For many women, hair is considered their “crowning glory.” Cutting it off is never an easy choice. Yet, in an extraordinary act of kindness, eight women stepped forward to donate their hair during the event.
The collected hair was handed over to professional wig makers, who would create natural wigs to be distributed free of cost to cancer patients who lose their hair as a side effect of chemotherapy. Each wig requires contributions from at least three donors, making every lock of hair invaluable.
Stories of Strength and Solidarity
Among the donors was Lalitha, a 73-year-old retired college professor. Her words captured the spirit of the initiative:
“It is important to show solidarity with cancer patients. Donating my hair is my way of boosting their morale.”
Dr. K. Govindaraj, Managing Trustee of SBCF, praised the donors for their generosity, adding that while patients’ hair often grows back after treatment, the real challenge lies in the emotional difficulty of going bald. This initiative helps boost confidence and allows women to carry on with their lives and work without stigma.
Inspiring Survivors
The event saw the participation of nearly 150 cancer survivors, many of whom shared their stories of resilience and recovery. Their message was clear:
“Breast cancer, if detected early, is curable.”
The day also featured slogan-writing competitions, where participants spread awareness in creative ways, reminding the community of the importance of early detection and regular health check-ups.
A Symbol of Hope
The Donate Hair 2019 campaign was not just about hair. It was about restoring dignity, spreading hope, and standing in solidarity with women battling cancer. By turning personal sacrifice into a powerful gesture of compassion, the donors reminded us that small acts of kindness can bring about profound change.
